Understanding Trauma
Trauma is a response to deeply distressing or disturbing events that overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope. While it is normal to feel shaken after a difficult experience, trauma differs in that it can leave lasting effects. Trauma can result from a single event, such as an accident or assault, or from ongoing situations like childhood neglect, abuse, or repeated exposure to distress. Each person’s experience of trauma is unique, and what may be traumatic for one person may not be for another.
Trauma can affect both the mind and body, influencing thoughts, emotions, relationships, and even physical health. Common symptoms may include intrusive memories, nightmares, heightened anxiety, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, and avoidance of reminders of the trauma.
