Different insurance providers cover different therapist credentials (for example, psychologist, social worker, or counsellor). Generally, most insurance companies cover some form of counselling, but you should always check with your insurance provider prior to booking to determine your coverage.
Astoria does not offer direct billing to insurance; however, we are happy to provide you with a detailed receipt for your service that you can submit for reimbursement. You should always check with your insurance provider prior to booking to determine your coverage and to ensure reimbursement.
At Astoria, we encourage a proactive approach when it comes to therapy. We believe that anyone can benefit from counselling services and that you do not need to be in imminent distress/crisis in order to access these supports! If you are struggling with a challenging situation or problem, you need space to openly share and obtain validation, and are willing to be open and honest with yourself and your therapist, counselling will likely be very beneficial for you.
In short, the main differences are the education/training they have completed and the licensing requirements. Registered Psychologists, Registered Social Workers, and Canadian Certified Counsellors may all provide counselling services. Assessment/diagnosis services are only provided by a Registered Psychologist with Authorized Practice Endorsement.
Registered Psychologists are highly trained in psychological and psychoeducational assessment and diagnosis. However, physicians and psychiatrists may also provide mental health diagnoses, such as ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Specific Learning Disorders are only diagnosed by a Registered Psychologist through comprehensive assessment.
If you are an adult who struggles with learning or attention, a psychoeducational assessment can provide helpful insights into your personal strengths, weaknesses, and possible options for treatment. If you received an assessment and/or diagnosis in childhood, an updated assessment will provide information on your current functioning and will guide appropriate supports (e.g., post-secondary accommodations; workplace strategies).
If you suspect that your child has a learning or attention disorder, a psychoeducational assessment will help determine their specific areas of strength and areas in need of support (e.g., reading, self-regulation, behaviour). A psychoeducational assessment will help to guide treatment and accommodation options for your child at school and at home. If your child receives a diagnosis through the assessment, this information can help parents, teachers, and other professionals better understand the child’s needs and support the child more effectively.
This depends on your therapist’s credentials and scope of practice. Some Registered Psychologists are able to provide both counselling and assessment services; however, most of the Registered Psychologists at Astoria specialize in one or the other. If you are seeing a therapist for counselling and you are interested in having a psychoeducational assessment completed, please inquire about a referral to one of our Registered Psychologists who specializes in assessment. Registered Social Workers and Canadian Certified Counsellors do not provide assessment/diagnosis at Astoria.
