Child (4+) and Youth Counselling

Children experience big emotions, but they often lack the language or skills to process them in healthy ways. Through age-appropriate approaches like play, conversation, and creative activities, your child can explore emotions, build coping skills, and gain confidence. Whether they’re facing anxiety, behavioral challenges, or changes at home or school, counselling offers gentle guidance to help them navigate their little world.

What to Expect

Prior to providing counselling to the child, a parents only session is required for children ages 4-10. If your child is between the ages of 10-13, the first few minutes of the initial session is reserved for a discussion with the parents, but a parents only session is not required.

The initial session will focus on gathering information about the child’s presenting concerns, how they interact with their peers and family members, and the goals for change that the parents/child would like to see. Together, a treatment plan will be formulated, and your counsellor will schedule a subsequent appointment(s) for your child.

Registered Social Worker/Canadian Certified Counsellor: $170 for 50 minute session

Registered Psychologist: $200 for 50 minute session

Depending on the age of your child, a follow up appointment may start with a parental check in and goal setting for the current session. If it is determined that the child is willing and able, they may go into the session by themselves. The counsellor will engage in various age appropriate activities and discussions to address difficult issues and emotions. Additional appointments will be scheduled at the end of each follow up appointment.

A joint custody form (signed by both parents) is required by law if the parents of the child (under the age of 16) are separated or divorced. Your child will not be able to receive counselling services until this form is completed and submitted.

Children under the age of 16 must have a parent or legal guardian consent for counselling services. Youth aged 16 and up are entitled to book counselling sessions without parental consent.
