Understanding Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects one’s ability to regulate attention, control impulses, and manage behavior. ADHD begins in childhood, but may be diagnosed in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. ADHD symptoms are generally categorized into two main types: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.

How Can Astoria Help with ADHD?

Astoria offers psychoeducational assessments for children, youth, and adults. These assessments can help you better understand your functioning and abilities and can determine whether you meet diagnostic criteria for ADHD. If you receive a diagnosis of ADHD, your psychologist will provide specific recommendations to help guide appropriate supports to help you reach your goals and potential.

Many people with ADHD benefit greatly from one-on-one counselling. Counselling may include education on ADHD, building strategies to improve executive functioning (e.g., organization; time management), and evidence-based therapy techniques, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy. The therapists at Astoria have experience working with clients with ADHD, as well as related mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety.

We understand that living with ADHD can be challenging; we’re here to help! Reach out to us today to get more information about booking an assessment for ADHD, or book a counselling appointment online.
